The Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley wraps up its Spring Irish Film Series on Thursday May 29 at 7 PM with the 1991 musical comedy-drama film “The Commitments.”
(Working) Class is in Session!
This iconic Irish film, based on the 1987 novel by Roddy Doyle, tells the story of the tumultuous rise and fall of “The Worlds Hardest Working Band,’ a ragtag band in Dublin called The Commitments.
Jimmy Rabbitte, an unemployed Dublin boy, decides to put together a soul band made up entirely of the Irish working class. Even though their raw talent and lofty aspirations gain the group notoriety, the pitfalls of fame began to tear at their newfound friendships as they prepare for their big show.
Commentary on the film, which has achieved cult status, will be provided prior to the film by Jeffrey A. Miller, PhD. Utica University Professor of Communication and Media. This film marks the end of our spring season, but fear not: We’ve got a great lineup of films coming your way in the Fall!
“Let’s All Go to the Lobby!”
A great movie, memorable music, savory popcorn, and the best part? The movie is free to watch! Just make sure to register ahead of time - you can sign up by registering at https://bit.ly/42vD4hk, or by sending an email to info@iccmv.org or by leaving a message at (315) 733-4228 Ext. 6.
This film will be shown in the H.A.R.P. Museum on the second floor of the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley, 623 Columbia St, Utica. Oh, and the venue is wheelchair accessible, so everyone can join in.
