Geordy Austin - “26+6: A United Ireland”
Bigi linn! Join us at 7 PM on Wednesday, September 17 at the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley when we pay tribute to Geordy Austin, a staunch supporter of Irish freedom and unification.
To say Geordy was passionate about all things Irish -- especially Irish unification -- would be an understatement of massive proportions. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Geordy left school at the age of 14 to help support his family of 13. As a union dock worker in Northern Ireland, Geordy saw first-hand the struggles imposed by the British majority against the Catholic minority Irish longing for a peaceful united Ireland. He had a passion for Ireland’s culture, especially its language which was derided and often suppressed by British authorities.
Geordy Austin - Fighter, Leader, Poet, Singer, Musician – Leaves His Mark
Geordy emigrated to the United States in 1981 and settled in Syracuse in 2000, where he continued his passionate commitment to Irish causes; immediately becoming active in many Central NY Irish organizations, including the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the CNY Irish Cultural Society and the CNY Irish Coalition. His love of Ireland and Irish culture was contagious. As a living witness to Irish history, he was often called upon to speak to local groups, and his recollections of life in Belfast would leave listeners spellbound.
One Last Fight…
Sadly, Geordy passed away on September 21, 2024 after a battle with cancer, leaving tales told and untold, and a great void in the Irish community of Central New York and in his beloved Ireland. Many of Geordy’s family and friends will be on hand at this presentation to tell us how they knew this man, his fight for a united Ireland, and the impact he had on Central New York’s Irish community.
There is no charge for this event, however donations are most appreciated. Those interested in attending are asked to register at http://bit.ly/45KTuFr.
