The Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley continues its Fall Irish Film Series on Thursday October 23 at 7 PM, with a showing of the 1934 film “Man of Aran.”
“Man of Aran” -- shot, written and directed by Robert J. Flaherty -- is a 1934 Irish fictional documentary film about life on the Aran Islands off the western coast of Ireland. It portrays characters living in premodern conditions, documenting their daily routines, such as fishing off high cliffs, farming potatoes where there is little soil, and hunting for huge basking sharks to get liver oil for lamps.
Despite its many omissions, embellishments and other controversies, most felt that “Man of Aran” encouraged an image of Ireland that was “…fiercely traditional, definitively rural, and resilient in the face of hardship,” and Flaherty remains a pioneer within the documentary genre.
Commentary on the film will be provided prior to the film by Jeffrey A. Miller, PhD. Utica University Professor of Communication and Media.
