Join us in the H.A.R.P. Museum at the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley on Wednesday, October 29 at 7 PM, for tales and songs that celebrate Ireland’s Samhain (Halloween) tradition.
Wait… Samhain??
In this darkening time of year, Samhain - pronounced “Sow-in” - arrives to herald autumn down its slide to winter, when the barrier between the living and the dead is thinnest. This evening we will present stories and songs collected in 19th century rural Ireland, from a time when science wasn’t so sure of itself. Brave attendees can expect tales and tunes of banshees and fiends, musical fairies - not the nice kind - and of course ghosts. Members of Craobh Dugan-O’Looney - performing as Amadán Dubh – promise to embrace the dark and shorten the night.
Okay, I get “Samhain”… but who - or what - is Amadán Dubh?
The name Amadán Dubh hails from Irish folklore and refers to the “dark fool” or “dark fairy.” A trickster fairy, Amadán Dubh is the “bringer of madness and oblivion… haunting the hills after sunset, playing reed pipes to work his magic.” And for this performance, Amadán Dubh possesses the souls of Craobh Dugan-O’Looney musicians Sue Romero, Allyson Sklar, Mike Hoke and Mike Carroll.
