The Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley concludes its Fall 2025 Irish Film Series on Thursday November 20 at 7 PM, with a showing of “Brendan Gleeson’s Farewell to Hughes’s.”
Hughes’s: An Unassuming Dublin pub with a Big History
For over 35 years, Hughes’s pub stood as a mecca of traditional Irish music for musicians, dancers, singers and listeners. To many, including Oscar-nominated actor Brendan Gleeson, it represented a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life; a place where traditional Irish musicians and step-dancers could come together in a welcoming space to play and to dance for visitors and for their own enjoyment.
In 2021, Hughes’s pub closed its doors for the last time after the death of its owner. In this documentary, Gleeson – a talented fiddle player in his own right - meets musicians, dancers and singers in and around the pub as they gather one last time to recreate the magic of Hughes’s and to commemorate its invaluable legacy. The film is approximately 60 minutes long.
Commentary on the film will be provided prior to the film by Jeffrey A. Miller, PhD. Utica University Professor of Communication and Media.
