On Thursday August 27, in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary declaring its independence from Great Britain, the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley is proud to present both episodes of the documentary “Rhéabhlóid Mheiriceá: Na Laochra Gael” (translation: “Irish Heroes of the American Revolution”). This documentary series explores the vital and largely unsung contributions of Irish men and women to the birth of the United States. As such, it is also a perfect complement to the current Museum exhibit “Ireland and the Making of America.” 

The first episode, “A Nation is Born,” will start at 7 PM. This episode focuses on key figures like Charles Thomson, a native of County Londonderry who arrived as a fatherless and penniless boy and went on to become the Secretary of the Continental Congress; Stephen Moylan from County Cork, whose expertise in shipping logistics led to several commanding positions in the Continental Army and was the first to use the phrase “United States of America” in writing; Henry Knox, the son of Ulster immigrants who went from bookstore owner to Secretary of War as the result of his heroic efforts to force the British Army out of Boston; and John Barry of Wexford, who earned the title “Father of the American Navy.” 

After a short break, the second episode, “Victory or Death,” will start at 8:15 PM. This episode highlights other significant Irish figures of the conflict, such as Margaret Corbin, who famously took over her husband’s artillery position in battle after he was killed. (hmmm… a potential Jeopardy question: “She was the first woman in U.S. history to receive a pension from Congress for military service.”)
